Archive of a Symphony

My last semester at SVA is nearing the end and I am now in the process of finishing up last projects and preparing for open studios. My large body of work Trees that look like wires that look like hands will be up in my studio, consisting of 138 drawings, along side with a number of prints and small paintings.

The original presentation of my drawing series could not come to fruition due to space issues, so I got to thinking on how I could make a record of the work as a whole. A stand in for what the work meant to me and how important it was for me to have it all together. I have been thinking about sculpture more and more over the last few months, and with this being my first real attempt at anything of the sort, I am excited to explore the new possibilities that it could produce along side as to how it could further my painting practice.

Continuing on

Some better shots of a few of these. Starting to make decicions on how all of these drawings will be arranged and grouped. Once that is finalized I will start to build frames and housing for the drawings to be fixed into. A lot of work ahead but this is the type of stuff I live for, and makes the day to day seem a little better.

39 Drawings(study)

This is a recent set of drawings done for a larger work. Again working in the 'theme and variation' method, I have taken 8 motif's that I have been rather obsessed with recently. Approched in smaller paintings I figure it was time to try another large project. The subjects them selves are rather simple, a house top, a cloud, these wonderful wires that look like two incredible hands, a stack, the grid, the circle, trees, and a tree farm. These shapes have continued to make their way into my paintings and thought process. Earlier this year I wanted to attempt to do another theme and variation but I had no ground to stand on. In a sense I had to re-invent a visual language in which to speak with. This method of working is also something that lands close to home, repetition and variation. The plan for the larger project is still pretty loose, other than it will involve a large number of works. More to come in the future weeks. Enjoy and happy holidays!

Been a while

It's been a while since my last post. Getting caught up in work and not really having the time to photograph work, let alone make posts on here. It has been a crazy couple of months. Lots of ups and downs in the work process. At one point early in the new school year purging myself of all my previous work to get a fresh start and give myself the exciting feeling of making work again. Even though  I am starting new it feels to be coming from a similar place, just with a fresh set of eyes. In a few weeks with the fall semester coming to an end I will have work shot and put on here and my website - (http://paulfiore.com/).

So far now a sneak preview......

Thesis and beyond

Now that my Einstein project is pretty much near completion (corrections and all) I have begun some new work. The way I approached the Einstein project has led me to change the way I think about painting. Not only the handling of the medium but the way it could look as well. Somewhat going for a more abstracted reality as I did in those 360 drawings.

The first here are a few small studies. Simple shapes and color to get the general idea of what the paintings could look like but on a much larger scale.

I also started s few still life's. Things around my room that I normally use for making my other works. In this case my ink well and tape roll. Only one pass on this so far.

This is one of the 44x48's that I have planned. It's simple. A blue wall with these aqua-teal struts that jut out from the wall. There was a single white wire running from side to side on the other side of the street that added in the division of space.

This is the second 44x48. A night scene and a painting that I am pleased with so far. Since I began the Einstein project back in the first week of November I have not painted. But drawing this whole time and the occasional gouache that I would incorporate into the pieces made me want to loosen up and be bolder with my paint. Not only the application but the color. Something that is not my strong suite, yet.

I have a few more paintings planned that I will start in the next few weeks. Feels good to be back!
